About the position

The Associate Science Communicator or Science Communicator position at the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) focuses on enhancing public understanding of water quality issues through effective science communication. This role supports the Clean Water Program, particularly the Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in San Francisco Bay, by creating engaging content and outreach strategies to communicate complex scientific information to diverse audiences. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between scientists and the public, ensuring that critical research is accessible and impactful.

Responsibilities

  • Write engaging and accessible content for websites, email newsletters, fact sheets, and social media platforms.
  • Prepare program annual reports and summaries of scientific findings.
  • Develop and refine communications strategies for key projects and scientific reports in collaboration with lead scientists.
  • Draft media advisories and press releases, and track media coverage.
  • Manage social media engagement and develop dynamic social media strategies.
  • Monitor and report on content performance to optimize communication efforts.
  • Participate in the planning and conceptualization of website designs to enhance user engagement.
  • Assist in organizing and hosting annual stakeholder meetings and outreach events.
  • Support fundraising efforts through content development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in media, journalism, or a relevant field with at least 6 years of science communications experience, or a Master's degree with at least 4 years of experience.
  • Exceptional writing skills, particularly in science writing related to environmental science, public health, or related fields.
  • Proven expertise in copywriting and content marketing.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite Applications and social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple detail-oriented tasks.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Interest in working in a mission-driven environmental science non-profit.
  • Experience communicating technical topics to the public, particularly in pollution, environmental science, or public health.
