About the position

In this entry-level position, employees will perform basic geographic information systems (GIS), computer-aided design (CAD), and technical engineering duties while expanding their knowledge to become a member of JEA's unbeatable Engineering Support team. This role is part of a multi-year training program designed to develop essential skills in inter-personal relations, engineering principles, methods, techniques, practices, and procedures, as well as specific competencies in GIS, image mosaics and layers, online maps, 3D layers, and CAD drawing principles. Trainees will progress through multiple modules of classroom instruction focused on electric and water/wastewater/reuse utilities. Additionally, they will receive field training in these areas. Periodic performance assessments will measure their knowledge and progress throughout the training program. Under immediate supervision, routine technical tasks will be performed, applying basic knowledge of drafting, GIS, and/or CAD designs, along with engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and principles. The role involves preparing, revising, correcting, and reviewing topographic maps, construction drawings, graphs, designs, and records utilizing GIS (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS) and/or CAD (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation) tools. Trainees will also review and prepare preliminary, final, and "as-built" drawings of electrical, civil, or mechanical nature. Following standard procedures for work sequences is essential to ensure uniform work outcomes. The position requires identifying and suggesting solutions to routine or recurring problems to improve processes, as well as filing and retrieving maps, records, and drawings in both electronic and paper formats. Additional responsibilities include reading and interpreting engineering plans and blueprints, processing electrical permits to complete service requests, and assisting in interpreting surveying and performing basic construction layout. Trainees will also review project plans and documents to ensure compliance with standards and regulatory requirements, operate field-engineering and imaging equipment, and enter data into JEA computer systems. The role requires the use of standard office equipment and software applications, including the Microsoft Office Suite, and performing other job-related work as assigned.
