About the position

The Associate Vice President and Chief Risk Officer (CRO) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) will lead the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) department, overseeing a team of 25 staff members and managing a $4.6 million Emergency Risk Management portfolio. This role is pivotal in guiding the university's risk management strategies, ensuring organizational resiliency, and providing risk intelligence to support strategic decision-making. The CRO will report to the university's vice president for operations and will be responsible for managing various risk programs, including Environmental Health and Safety, Disaster Recovery, and Emergency Preparedness.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) department.
  • Manage a $4.6 million Emergency Risk Management portfolio.
  • Communicate the university's risk priorities to Executive Management and the Board of Trustees.
  • Assess and implement effective business continuity and disaster recovery measures across CMU.
  • Develop and deploy the core ERM toolset including risk identification, assessment, prioritization, mitigation, monitoring, reporting templates, and communication tools.
  • Enhance Emergency Response Procedures and improve emergency protocols.
  • Establish and maintain a governance framework for risk management.
  • Identify safety concerns and coordinate mitigation activities with stakeholders.
  • Lead projects to develop and execute risk reduction strategies for key strategic initiatives.
  • Maintain the risk inventory and update CMU's enterprise risk profile for executive discussions.
  • Partner with education leaders to provide periodic risk education.
  • Work with risk owners to complete periodic risk analysis and develop risk documentation and reporting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.
  • 15+ years of experience in Risk Management required.
  • Successful background check.
