About the position

The Associate Vice President for Research Advancement, Senior Advisor to VPRI, will lead the research advancement team at the University of Minnesota, overseeing various grant programs and strategic initiatives. This role involves advising the Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI) on research advancement, managing partnerships, and developing research teams to align with emerging trends and funding opportunities. The AVP will also be responsible for institutional reporting and strategy development, collaborating with stakeholders to enhance research initiatives and support the university's research mission.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the RIO Research Advancement team, overseeing multiple seed grant programs and matching funds for federal awards.
  • Lead recruitment efforts for committee chairs and faculty reviewers for large grant competitions.
  • Track and analyze outcomes of funded research advancement programs.
  • Serve as a close advisor to the VPRI on research advancement and strategic initiatives.
  • Assist in implementing research advancement activities championed by VPRI.
  • Identify emerging research trends and funding opportunities, developing reports for VPRI.
  • Lead the strategic plan development for RIO.
  • Assist VPRI in ensuring compliance with policies and regulatory changes.
  • Track recommendations from national organizations related to research advancement.
  • Optimize financial models for sustainable RIO operations while expanding research expenditures.
  • Manage RIO Advisory Board meetings and serve as the primary contact for board members.
  • Develop data-driven insights to assess and improve research advancement efforts.
  • Serve as the senior analyst for institutional research reporting and strategic performance.
  • Assist VPRI in preparing presentations and reports for key stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with External Affairs and Communications teams to highlight research successes.
  • Advise on RIO web page content and engage in departmental faculty meetings.
  • Host delegations from industry and federal agencies to develop collaborations.
  • Serve as a RIO liaison to the Corporate Engagement Center and assist in RIO development efforts.
  • Develop new programs and initiatives within RIO, including undergraduate research opportunities.

Requirements

  • PhD degree or other doctoral degree.
  • 10 or more years of professional experience in research advancement activities or leadership roles in higher education.
  • Established track record of conducting independent research and managing research grants.
  • Deep understanding of federal, state, and private funding sources, including NIH, NSF, and DoD.
  • Expertise in reviewing and providing feedback on research grants.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data sets related to institutional performance metrics.
  • Experience supervising and developing staff.
  • Comfort with public speaking and representing the university's research mission.
  • Ability to communicate research goals and successes to stakeholders.
  • Experience working with diverse internal stakeholders to support research initiatives.
