About the position

The Associate Vice President for Public Safety is the senior safety and security official at William & Mary, responsible for developing and leading a comprehensive public safety operation. This role encompasses various areas including Police, Security, Emergency Management, and Risk Management, ensuring a safe environment for the university community. The AVP collaborates with multiple departments to address safety concerns and oversees compliance with legal and regulatory mandates.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, plan, implement, and lead a comprehensive public safety operation.
  • Oversee Police, Security, Emergency Management, Risk Management, and related programs.
  • Cultivate a spirit of service and partnerships within the public safety staff.
  • Join with Student Affairs to address student mental health crises and safety concerns.
  • Serve as Co-Chair of the Emergency Management Team and Chair of the Violence Prevention Committee.
  • Manage legal and regulatory mandates, professional standards, and accreditation requirements.
  • Lead strategic planning, fiscal management, and policy development for public safety.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public safety, emergency management, or a related field with significant relevant experience.
  • Significant management experience in a federal, state, local, or university environment.
  • Demonstrable administrative, leadership, and organizational skills in emergency management and safety training.
  • Knowledge of the National Incident Management System.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in law enforcement or public safety management and supervision.
  • Knowledge of safety and security practices in higher education.
  • Experience in identifying and mitigating targeted violence using evidence-based approaches.
