About the position

The Assistant Division Controller at Republic Services, Inc. plays a crucial role in managing the accounting workflow and providing analytical support to division management. The Assistant Division Controller assists the Business Unit Finance Manager in ensuring that accounting activities are completed accurately and on time, while also providing guidance to accounting and administrative staff. This role is essential in maintaining compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company policies, as well as ensuring that all internal and external reporting deadlines are met. In this position, the Assistant Division Controller will perform complex accounting activities, including the monthly reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts. They will prepare and review supporting documentation and financial statements to ensure compliance with GAAP and company policies. The role also involves providing direction to various accounting functional areas such as invoice processing, billing, cash receipts, work order processing, credit analysis, receivable collections, month-end close, journal entries, statistical data, and payroll. The Assistant Division Controller will assist in managing the accounting workflow across all division departments, including sales, customer service, operations, and HR. Additionally, the Assistant Division Controller will support the Business Unit Finance Manager in pricing and profitability analysis, commercial and municipal bids, and market development projects. They will also assist with the annual budget and interim forecasting process, providing analytical reviews as needed. The role includes supporting the accounting aspects of capital expenditures, transfers, and retirements, as well as assisting with periodic financial audits and responding to information requests from corporate and area field financial management. Overall, this position is integral to ensuring the financial integrity and operational efficiency of the division.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex accounting activities to record, analyze, and monitor financial information.
  • Responsible for monthly reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts.
  • Prepare and review required supporting documentation and financial statements to ensure compliance with GAAP and company policies.
  • Assist the Business Unit Finance Manager in managing accounting personnel.
  • Provide direction to different accounting functional areas including invoice processing, billing, cash receipts, work order processing, credit analysis, receivable collections, month-end close, journal entries, statistical data, and payroll.
  • Assist in managing the accounting workflow across all division departments (sales, customer service, operations, HR, etc.).
  • Ensure proper internal controls are in place, including compliance with company policies, Sarbanes Oxley, and other statutory requirements.
  • Ensure all internal and external reporting deadlines are met.
  • Provide accounting assistance and support to corporate and/or area leadership as necessary.
  • Assist with pricing and profitability analysis, commercial and municipal bids, and market development projects.
  • Support the Business Unit Finance Manager during the annual budget and interim forecasting process and assist with analytical review.
  • Support the accounting aspects of capital expenditures, transfers, and retirements.
  • Assist with periodic financial audits including internal audits, external audits, and peer reviews.
  • Respond to information requests from corporate and area field financial management as required.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.

Requirements

  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of GAAP, Sarbanes-Oxley 404, and compliance requirements of other financial statutes.
  • Demonstrated initiative to research and follow up on non-standard situations to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively coach, mentor, and train others to meet performance expectations.
  • Ability to establish processes and procedures to ensure effective department workflow.
