The Department of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Game Development and Immersive Media. This role is designed for an innovative and dedicated educator and practitioner with a strong background in game development, particularly using engines such as Unity and Unreal. The successful candidate will be expected to produce a variety of content-driven VR/XR projects and create virtual assets, while also exploring related fields such as VR production. In addition to robust technical skills, the ideal candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of how games and immersive experiences can be utilized to create meaning, educate, and entertain. A broader understanding of interaction and user experience design is also essential, as the role emphasizes the importance of play in these contexts. The appointment is set to begin on August 22, 2024, with a mandatory two-day orientation on August 22 and 23, 2024. Emerson College itself enrolls over 5,800 students from diverse backgrounds, with campuses in Boston, Los Angeles, and the Netherlands. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate classes in game development and emerging media, strengthen and revise the VMA curriculum based on their research in VR/XR and game design, and engage in academic advising and student mentorship. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to a diverse academic community and who are committed to issues of social, economic, racial, and gender justice and equity in their work. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate a record of significant engagement with these issues in their teaching, creative work, and service.
