About the position

The AST Biological Studies Technical Manager/Senior Scientist will oversee the operations, policies, and procedures of the Neuroscience Laboratory (NSL). This role involves leading a team of scientists and engineers, managing funding and collaborations for astronaut-related neurovestibular and sensorimotor research, and ensuring compliance with institutional review boards. The position requires a strong background in scientific research and the ability to coordinate complex projects within the aerospace sector.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and conduct ground analog and flight experiments for spacecraft or ground-based laboratories.
  • Coordinate with customers for milestones, deliverables, and service deadlines to align with stakeholder goals.
  • Ensure compliance with Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and oversee the development of IRB submissions and procedures.
  • Provide scientific recommendations on research plans related to Sensorimotor Risk.
  • Oversee the development and revision of astronaut-related sensorimotor and neurovestibular efforts, including testing requirements for ISS and exploration programs.
  • Draft and modify contractor Statement of Work (SOW) requirements and present Technical, Cost, Schedule, and Risk (TCSR) to customers.
  • Author and review scientific conference proceedings, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Present scientific material at internal and external meetings and conferences.
  • Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator (Co-I) for multiple research studies and develop integrated science protocols.
  • Foster a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence, and innovation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, or Computer Science.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to GS-13 level for GS-14 applicants, including oversight of astronaut-related sensorimotor efforts and data assessment.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to GS-14 level for GS-15 applicants, including overseeing laboratory apparatus development and serving as PI for research studies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with NASA's aerospace technology and research protocols.
  • Familiarity with machine learning modeling procedures.
  • Strong communication skills for presenting scientific material.
