About the position

The AST position in Biological Studies at NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center involves designing, developing, and conducting experiments related to astronaut health and performance. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of research objectives, compliance with institutional review boards, and oversight of astronaut-related sensorimotor and neurovestibular efforts. The position also includes responsibilities for drafting technical documents, presenting scientific findings, and fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and conduct ground analog and flight experiments for spacecraft or ground-based laboratories.
  • Analyze collected science data from experiments.
  • Coordinate with customers for milestones, deliverables, and service deadlines.
  • Ensure compliance with Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and oversee IRB submittals and procedures.
  • Provide scientific recommendations on research plans related to Sensorimotor Risk.
  • Oversee astronaut-related sensorimotor and neurovestibular efforts, including testing for ISS and exploration programs.
  • Draft and modify contractor Statement of Work (SOW) requirements and present Technical, Cost, Schedule, and Risk (TCSR) to customers.
  • Author and review scientific conference proceedings, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Present scientific material at internal and external meetings and conferences.
  • Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator (Co-I) for multiple research studies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, or Computer Science with relevant coursework.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to GS-13 level in overseeing astronaut-related sensorimotor efforts and coordinating with customers.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to GS-14 level in overseeing laboratory apparatus development and interpreting experimental data.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with machine learning modeling procedures.
  • Familiarity with NASA's research protocols and compliance requirements.
