About The Position

The Autism Support Specialist/Behavior Support Specialist (AST/BST) is responsible for planning, organizing, and presenting instructional environments that facilitate the educational and social development of students with autism and behavioral challenges. This role involves managing instructional time, student behavior, and providing effective instructional feedback while ensuring a supportive learning environment.

Requirements

  • Degree in education or a related area qualifying for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
  • Ability to use various classroom tools and equipment, including those for children with special needs.
  • Ability to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with students with autism or behavioral challenges.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact with students and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Manage instructional time effectively by preparing materials and getting students on task quickly.
  • Establish and enforce rules and procedures for student behavior and participation during various instructional activities.
  • Present lessons clearly, using understandable concepts and language, and provide relevant examples and demonstrations.
  • Monitor student performance and provide timely feedback on in-class and out-of-class work to encourage growth.
  • Develop and revise instructional plans based on diagnostic information and maintain accurate records of student performance.
  • Interact fairly and effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community.
  • Perform non-instructional duties as assigned and adhere to established laws and policies.
