About the position

The Athletic Academic Coach at San José State University plays a crucial role in supporting the academic success of student-athletes. This position involves providing academic coaching, counseling, and assessment to help student-athletes navigate their academic requirements and maintain eligibility for athletic participation. The coach will develop and implement academic support programs, liaise with coaching staff, and monitor student progress to ensure compliance with university and NCAA standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic academic coaching and support to a cohort of students
  • Develop and implement an asset-based and strengths-based approach using a case management strategy
  • Reinforce college-based and other success centers' orientation of students to their academic requirements
  • Liaise with college-based success centers to ensure students are enrolled in appropriate courses
  • Contribute to retention programs such as summer bridge
  • Monitor academic progress using early support systems and implement timely interventions
  • Monitor student-athletes' academic progress toward degree and eligibility
  • Provide coaching on courses and major selection
  • Update student athletes' data on official records and monitor eligibility
  • Prepare and submit regular reports on progress and status of SARC programming
  • Interpret and explain policies to staff members and provide clarification on policies and procedures
  • Support students by communicating with coaches and other Department of Athletics staff

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience
  • A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may substitute for one year of experience
  • A doctorate degree and appropriate internship or clinical training may substitute for three years of experience

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Social Work, Education, or a directly related field
  • Demonstrated NCAA knowledge and work experience in academic support of student-athletes
  • Demonstrated written communication skills with a strong customer service background
  • Experience with CSU/SJSU General Education and undergraduate degree requirements
  • Experience with PeopleSoft and/or customer service based technology systems
