About the position

The position of Athletic Coach involves instructing and coaching students in the specified sport, arranging playing schedules, and performing all coaching responsibilities associated with the role. Coaches are required to attend all necessary meetings and training sessions as specified by the Office of Athletics and Leisure (OAL). All hires and work schedules for the school year are contingent upon student enrollment, sports sign-ups, and the sports schedules developed for the season.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct and coach students in the sport indicated.
  • Help arrange playing schedules.
  • Perform/assist in all coaching responsibilities associated with the position.
  • Attend all required meetings and trainings as specified by OAL.

Requirements

  • Must meet all qualifications listed in the job description.
  • Preference given to current certificated employees of Oakland Unified School District with a valid CA teaching credential.
  • Valid, current CPR card AND Valid, current First Aid card OR proof of completing a college-level course in the care/prevention of athletic injuries OR a valid EMT I or II card OR a valid Sports Injury Certificate.
  • Certifications in Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Concussion, Heat illness prevention, and Fundamentals of coaching training (high school) OR Coaching Middle School training (middle school).
  • Knowledge of coaching theory and techniques in the sport, evidenced by college coursework, prior coaching experience, or participation in the sport at the high school level.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of the sport at the high school level.
  • Knowledge of adolescent psychology as it relates to sports participation.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of safety in all aspects of coaching at practices and contests.
  • Demonstrated high ethical standards related to sportsmanship, fair play, and relationships with students.
  • Ability to communicate with parents/guardians and appropriate school staff regarding problems or emergencies during sporting events.
  • Knowledge of school policies and California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) policies related to athletics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous successful experiences coaching the sport at the level of the vacancy.
