About the position

The Athletic Director at Gateway High School is responsible for overseeing the school's athletic programs, ensuring they align with the institution's educational values and commitment to diversity and anti-racist practices. This role involves providing support to student-athletes and coaches, managing logistics, scheduling, and compliance with regulations, while fostering a positive culture within the athletics department.

Responsibilities

  • Provide social & emotional support for student-athletes and coaches.
  • Manage scheduling and logistics for all athletics teams and events.
  • Request and confirm off-campus fields for sports activities.
  • Travel for games as required.
  • Schedule and confirm officials for contests.
  • Distribute and collect eligibility paperwork and waivers for student-athletes.
  • Publicize and enforce important athletics deadlines.
  • Hire, supervise, and develop coaches.
  • Attend league and section meetings to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Manage the athletics department budget and strategic investments.
  • Oversee uniform and equipment inventory, ordering, and maintenance.
  • Design and maintain the fitness center and student-athlete resource center.
  • Administer games, scrimmages, and special community events.
  • Manage the PE hours submission process for graduation requirements.
  • Monitor academic performance and citizenship of student-athletes.
  • Train and supervise team support staff and managers.
  • Hold listening sessions for feedback from student-athletes and coaches.
  • Manage Gateway Athletic social media to promote participation.
  • Conduct sports intro meetings and awards banquets.
  • Advocate for departmental improvements in collaboration with school administration.

Requirements

  • Background and experience in sports with a passion for athletics.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to collaborate and multi-task in a high-pressure environment.
  • Commitment to Gateway's mission and working with a diverse student body.
  • Desire to build a positive school culture and community.
  • Initiative, flexibility, and creativity in program development.
  • Experience working with high school students in an urban public school is preferred.
  • First-Aid, AED, Concussion awareness certifications (can be completed post-hire).
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Availability on weeknights and Saturdays.
