About the position

The Athletic Director at Rogers High School is responsible for providing every student with the opportunity to participate in extracurricular athletic activities. This role is crucial in fostering physical skills, a sense of worth and competence, and an understanding of the pleasures of sport and the principles of fair play. The Athletic Director will oversee both intramural and interscholastic athletic programs, ensuring that all activities are well-organized and effectively administered. This includes coordinating events, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with eligibility requirements for student-athletes. The position requires strong leadership skills to select, assign, and evaluate coaches and staff, as well as to maintain good relations with the community regarding the athletic program. In addition to administrative duties, the Athletic Director will work closely with the principal and other school officials to develop rules and regulations governing athletic activities. They will also be responsible for the scheduling of interscholastic events, hiring officials, and ensuring proper supervision during home games. The role involves arranging transportation for athletes, overseeing ticket sales and fundraising events, and maintaining records of athletic contests and awards. The Athletic Director will also coordinate with the Recreation Department and ensure that all facilities are available for practices and games. This position is vital in promoting school spirit and support for athletic teams, acting as a liaison to the Rogers Boosters Club, and administering all interscholastic policies in accordance with the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes and administers the overall program of extracurricular athletics at Rogers High School.
  • Coordinates all athletic program events and activities with the Director of the Recreation Department, City of Newport.
  • Provides leadership in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches and staff members.
  • Fosters good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.
  • Assumes responsibility for the organization and scheduling of all interscholastic athletic events.
  • Hires officials and police officers as required, and arranges for the attendance of the school physician for home games.
  • Arranges transportation for athletic contest participants.
  • Assists the principal in developing rules and regulations governing athletic activities.
  • Verifies each athlete's eligibility according to established physical and academic requirements.
  • Prepares and administers the athletic program budget and orders supplies and equipment.
  • Supervises all ticket sales and fundraising events of the athletic program.
  • Arranges all details of visiting teams' needs, including lodging and meals.
  • Coordinates all athletic activities and available facilities for practices and games.
  • Provides for the physical examination of all athletes prior to the beginning of each season.
  • Administers the insurance program covering school athletes and processes reports and claims.
  • Keeps records of the results of all athletic contests and maintains a record file of all award winners.
  • Directs an in-school extracurricular program to foster support for athletic teams and school spirit.
  • Acts as the school liaison to the Rogers Boosters Club.
  • Administers all interscholastic policies and procedures in accordance with the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Requirements

  • Hold Rhode Island Teaching Certificate for All Grades Physical Education Teacher, Grades PK-12, APE & Health endorsements.
  • Possession of a Rhode Island Coaching Certificate and able to obtain a Rhode Island Chauffeur's License.
  • Possession of a Master's Degree in Physical Education, School Administration or related fields is desired.
  • Active member of the Rhode Island Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association is required.
  • 5+ years of successful High School Athletics Coaching experience.
  • Knowledge of all phases of athletics and ability to utilize technology in the teaching and learning process.
  • Possession of good oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of ability to work successfully at an administrative level.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform responsibilities as evidenced by coursework, educational experience, and the interview process.
  • Successful completion of the Science of Reading Training.
