About the position

The Athletic Director at Dirksen Junior High is responsible for promoting and supporting the social-emotional, physical, and intellectual outcomes of student-athletes within the Joliet Public Schools District 86. This role involves overseeing athletic programs, conducting surveys for feedback, managing equipment and schedules, and ensuring compliance with interscholastic policies. The Athletic Director serves as a liaison among staff, administration, and the community, and plays a key role in the hiring process for coaching positions.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and support student outcomes in athletics.
  • Conduct annual student-athlete surveys for feedback on coaches.
  • Serve as a liaison between staff, administration, and community stakeholders.
  • Inform the Program Coordinator of potential Athletic Department purchasing needs.
  • Review staff requests and make recommendations to the Program Coordinator and Principal.
  • Ensure proper inventory and maintenance of athletic equipment by coaches.
  • Develop and confirm athletic schedules with the Program Coordinator and Principal.
  • Administer interscholastic policies and procedures according to IESA rules and district guidelines.
  • Observe coaches and make recommendations regarding job expectations and assignments.
  • Inform the Program Coordinator and Principal of vacant coaching positions.
  • Collaborate with the Principal in the hiring process for coaching positions.
  • Check the safety of facilities before practices and contests.
  • Resolve conflicts within the Athletic Department and provide solutions.
  • Submit equipment and uniform inventory reports at the end of the school year.
  • Maintain current files of student-athletes and their eligibility documentation.
  • Work with the Principal to monitor student-athlete academic eligibility.
  • Coordinate with coaches for athletic assemblies and spirit rallies.
  • Arrange for police presence at home interscholastic events when necessary.
  • Represent the school district in athletic business at various meetings and conferences.
  • Schedule and conduct student/parent meetings and ensure dates are on the athletic calendar.
  • Evaluate the athletic program and present recommendations for policy changes.

Requirements

  • Mid-level experience in athletic administration or related field.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities effectively.
  • Knowledge of interscholastic policies and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in coaching or athletic program management.
  • Familiarity with student-athlete academic support systems.
  • Skills in conflict resolution and problem-solving.
