About the position

The Wayne-Westland Community School District is seeking a dedicated and experienced Athletic Director to oversee the high school athletic department. This role is crucial in fostering a culture of excellence among student-athletes, ensuring they achieve academic success while maintaining high standards of behavior and athletic performance. The Athletic Director will work closely with the entire high school community, including students, parents, coaches, and school administrators, to develop and implement a comprehensive athletic program that aligns with the district's educational goals. The Athletic Director will be responsible for coordinating the athletic programs across the district, ensuring uniformity and collaboration between elementary, middle, and high schools. This includes developing athletic policies, providing guidance on compliance with the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) rules, and supporting the athletic program's growth and development. The position requires a strong commitment to gender equity in athletics and the ability to foster positive relationships within the community to promote the athletic programs effectively. In addition to administrative duties, the Athletic Director will play a key role in the evaluation and selection of athletic equipment, the maintenance of athletic facilities, and the promotion of interscholastic sports. The successful candidate will demonstrate a thorough understanding of athletic administration, possess strong leadership skills, and be able to motivate and inspire coaches and student-athletes alike. The role also involves attending various meetings and events to represent the district and ensure the athletic program's success.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and coordinate a District-wide athletic program in collaboration with elementary and middle schools.
  • Create and update athletic policies with input from principals, athletic directors, and coaches.
  • Support the development of a District-wide athletic program policy and guidebook.
  • Provide guidance on Board policy and MHSAA rules to schools.
  • Assist in the evaluation and selection of athletic equipment.
  • Serve as a consultant for athletic construction projects within the District.
  • Monitor compliance with gender equity in the athletic program.
  • Act as the District liaison for athletics to various educational and athletic organizations.
  • Coordinate athletic training provisions with local agencies.
  • Organize physical examinations for all athletes with local agencies.
  • Oversee the maintenance of athletic facilities in collaboration with District departments.
  • Conduct periodic meetings for athletic directors for program planning.
  • Promote publicity for interscholastic sports through various media.
  • Foster community relationships to enhance awareness of athletic programs.
  • Maintain communication with District and school personnel for effective information exchange.
  • Respond to inquiries or concerns in a timely manner.
  • Keep the Director of Student Services informed about potential issues.
  • Attend necessary local, district, regional, state, and national meetings.
  • Encourage professional growth among athletic directors and coaches through memberships and participation in organizations and seminars.
  • Coordinate the District Athletic Coaching Endorsement Add-On Certification Program.
  • Assist coaches in staying updated on current practices and legal issues in athletics.
  • Maintain expertise in assigned areas to achieve project goals.
  • Set high standards and expectations for self and others.
  • Coordinate the purchase of athletic equipment and establish admission prices for events.
  • Seek financial support for the athletic program.
  • Prepare and submit required reports and maintain appropriate records.
  • Support the goals and priorities of the District.
  • Represent the District positively and professionally.
  • Encourage schools to provide athletic opportunities for all students and establish annual goals for the athletic program.
  • Implement an annual evaluation of the athletic program.
  • Utilize strategies for effective decision-making regarding planning and service delivery.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree from an accredited educational institution.
  • Valid administrative certification or enrollment in a certification program within six months, with certification obtained within three years.
  • Five years of high school coaching experience preferred.
  • Secondary teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience implementing an evaluation framework.
  • Demonstrated success in raising achievement with a diverse student population.
  • Ability to maintain productive relationships with central staff, teachers, parents, and students.
  • Working knowledge of MHSAA rules and regulations.
