About the position

The Athletic Director at Southwest Virginia Community College is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing the athletic program in accordance with National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) regulations. This role involves supervising coaches, work-study students, and part-time employees, ensuring the effective operation of the athletic department while promoting student-athlete success and compliance with athletic standards.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and manage the athletic program according to NJCAA regulations.
  • Supervise coaches, work-study students, and part-time employees assigned to the athletic program.
  • Arrange travel and schedule events for athletic teams.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports related to the athletic program.
  • Manage the budget preparation and maintenance for the athletic department.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and the public regarding athletic events and programs.
  • Coordinate with public relations and media for promotions of athletic events and student-athletes.
  • Negotiate transfer cases with 4-year institutions under NJCAA and NCAA regulations.
  • Instruct students in various athletic and sports activities.
  • Delegate work assignments and supervise personnel in multiple operational units.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in coaching and coordination of sports, academic advising, and student activities.
  • Considerable knowledge of athletic programs, rules, regulations, and budget preparation.
  • Ability to instruct students in athletic activities and supervise personnel.
  • Strong communication skills with students, parents, and the public.
  • Knowledge of financial processes related to student accounts and budget preparation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in physical education, recreation, sports management, or a related field.
  • CPR and emergency-related certifications.
