About the position

The Athletic Director at Braxton County Middle School is responsible for organizing and administering the overall athletic program within the school. This role requires a valid West Virginia teaching certificate, a Secondary Administrative Certificate, and either Evaluation Leadership Institute Certification or WVSSAC Approval. The Athletic Director must also undergo a criminal background check as per state regulations. The position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is expected to begin at the start of the 2024-2025 sports season. The Athletic Director serves as a role model for students, promoting ethical principles and democratic values, and is expected to maintain a drug-free workplace. Previous experience in a similar role is preferred. In this capacity, the Athletic Director will provide leadership in selecting and assigning athletic coaches, hiring officials, and ensuring proper supervision of home contests. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate records of athletic properties, providing orientation for coaches, requisitioning supplies and equipment, and creating necessary documentation such as handbooks and schedules. The Athletic Director will also develop rules and regulations for athletic activities, interpret school policies, and foster community relations to keep the public informed about the athletic program. The role involves supervising ticket sales and fundraising events, organizing and scheduling athletic events, arranging transportation for participants, and ensuring compliance with eligibility requirements for student-athletes. The Athletic Director will also administer the insurance program for school athletes and maintain records of athletic contests. Additionally, the position requires planning and supervising an annual recognition program for athletes and collaborating with the principal and athletic boosters to enhance the athletic program. The Athletic Director is expected to attend district, regional, and state athletic meetings as required and perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in the selection and assignment of athletic coaches with final recommendations to the Superintendent or designee.
  • Hire officials and game management personnel as required and supervise home contests.
  • Supervise head coaches in maintaining up-to-date inventories and accurate records of properties.
  • Provide orientation for all coaches.
  • Requisition program supplies and equipment and determine equipment needs in cooperation with head coaches.
  • Create documents to maintain the coach's handbook, student athletic handbook, team brochures, schedule formats, and tournament communications.
  • Ensure all coaches and TSS's maintain current WVSSAC coaching certificates.
  • Develop and implement rules and regulations governing athletic activities.
  • Interpret school policies as they pertain to athletics.
  • Foster good community relations by keeping the community informed about the athletic program.
  • Supervise ticket sales and fundraising events, ensuring proper handling of funds.
  • Organize and schedule all athletic events, including transportation for participants.
  • Arrange details for visiting teams' needs and field assistance as appropriate.
  • Supervise preparation of areas for contests and organize practice schedules.
  • Administer physical and academic eligibility requirements for participation in sports.
  • Verify and record physical examinations of all athletes prior to each season.
  • Administer the insurance program covering school athletes and process reports and claims.
  • Maintain records of results from all athletic contests and keep a record file.
  • Plan and supervise an annual recognition program for school athletes.
  • Assist organizations with projects associated with athletics.
  • Work with the principal to supervise and attend athletic events.
  • Attend district, regional, and state athletic meetings as required.
  • Act as a liaison for the district with athletic boosters and foster cooperation between departments.

Requirements

  • Valid West Virginia teaching certificate.
  • Secondary Administrative Certificate.
  • Evaluation Leadership Institute Certification or WVSSAC Approval.
  • Criminal background check as per WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10.
  • Previous experience in a similar role preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations with parents and community members.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
