About the position

The Athletic Director (AD) at St. Paul City School is a pivotal role responsible for the comprehensive planning, implementation, and coordination of the Athletic Program within the framework of a Full-Service Community School. This position requires close collaboration with the Site Supervisor and the Full-Service Community School Coordinator, and it reports directly to the Director of Community Education. The AD will oversee the hiring and management of staff, coaches, and vendors, ensuring that all operations align with the Minnesota State High School League policies and the Saint Paul City School handbook. The role also involves adhering to federal, state, and local grant requirements, including grant reporting protocols and budget timelines. In this capacity, the Athletic Director will manage the entire athletic program, which includes hiring and training coaches, and working in conjunction with the Director of Community Education to develop a cohesive athletics program. The AD will lead or co-lead all school sports activities, collaborating with school administrators, staff, teachers, community partners, and families to implement sports activities effectively. Monthly meetings of the athletics team will be facilitated and documented by the AD, ensuring accurate records of rosters, meeting agendas, and minutes are maintained. The position also entails direct engagement with students and families to provide seamless athletic services that integrate school and community resources. The AD will supervise after-school athletic operations and evening programs, coordinating logistics such as transportation. Budget preparation for each activity will be a key responsibility, along with timely submission of purchase requests for materials and equipment needed for co-curricular activities. The AD will also manage the hiring, development, and training of coaches, advisors, equipment managers, and athletic trainers, monitoring staffing needs and conducting evaluations to inform employment recommendations. Communication is a critical aspect of this role, as the AD will maintain ongoing dialogue with parents, coaches, advisors, and administration regarding program activities. The AD will also develop and maintain a communication system to keep the school board, administration, students, and the public informed about events and program needs. Additionally, the AD will be responsible for scheduling athletic teams, practices, and facility usage, ensuring alignment with charter school cohorts for programming.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the entire Athletic program and manage the hiring and training of coaches.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Community Education to plan the overall athletics program.
  • Lead and co-lead all school sports activities.
  • Facilitate and document monthly meetings of the athletics team, maintaining accurate rosters and meeting minutes.
  • Coordinate with district colleagues and community service providers for sports-based activities.
  • Work directly with students and families to ensure seamless athletic services across school and community services.
  • Supervise after-school athletic operations and evening athletic programs, including coordination with transportation.
  • Prepare the budget for each activity and submit it to the Director of Community Education as needed.
  • Present all purchases of needed materials and equipment for co-curricular activities to the Director of Community Education in a timely manner.
  • Manage the hiring, development, and training of coaches, advisors, equipment managers, and athletic trainers.
  • Monitor staffing needs in each activity and coordinate interviews for hiring.
  • Conduct pre-season mandatory head coaches meetings and post-season evaluations.
  • Maintain communication with parents, coaches, advisors, and administration regarding all program activities.
  • Develop and maintain an updated coaches, directors, and advisors handbook.
  • Schedule athletic teams, practices, and facility usage, and communicate with charter school cohorts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or comparable experience required.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in education or community/social services preferred.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work tactfully and effectively with students, families, colleagues, and community members.
  • Flexibility and ability to manage time and multiple tasks effectively.
  • Commitment to involving and empowering youth and families.
  • Adaptability for directed and independent work.

  • Competitive pay ranging from $7,500 to $15,000 per year, or $20 to $40 per hour, commensurate with experience.
