About the position

The Athletic Trainer - Orthopedics position at Omaha Children's Hospital involves providing specialized athletic training services to pediatric patients in an orthopedic clinic setting. The role includes conducting patient assessments, coordinating care, and implementing treatment plans under the direction of a physician. The trainer will also participate in the education of student athletic trainers and engage in community outreach programs. This position emphasizes professional development, teamwork, and a commitment to providing high-quality care to children.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct holistic age-specific patient/family assessments upon visit according to defined standards.
  • Collect and document data related to patient's physical, mental, developmental, emotional and social condition.
  • Demonstrate age-specific competency in assessment of patients.
  • Assess family expectations for involvement in the assessment and continuous care of the patient.
  • Communicate plan of care to the patient/family.
  • Coordinate patient care to ensure continuity of care.
  • Facilitate timely communication to/from patient/family and other healthcare disciplines.
  • Review patient charts to facilitate coordination of care.
  • Follow up on tests and lab results within established time frames.
  • Consider cultural, cognitive, emotional, and social influences on the patient/families ability and readiness to learn.
  • Instruct patients and families in therapeutic exercise and develop Home Exercise Programs.
  • Act as a liaison between physician and patients/parents/physical therapists/athletic trainers/coaches regarding rehabilitation and return to practice/play status.
  • Develop and implement injury and illness prevention strategies for athletes and the physically active.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, parents, and other providers.
  • Participate in seminars, clinical programs, and lecture series for various health professionals.
  • Provide positive and effective customer service in support of the Program and health system operations.
  • Maintain inventory of orthopedic supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with the development of the facility, operations, and programs to support the orthopedic service line.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training or an accredited educational program by the NATA-BOC.
  • 1-3 years experience working as an athletic trainer in orthopedics/sports medicine.
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support within 90 Days.
  • AT - Certified Athletic Trainer.
  • Nebraska state license to practice as an Athletic Trainer.
  • Valid driver's license required for travel to various satellite locations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge of athletic training treatment and modalities.
  • Strong clinical knowledge of pediatric orthopedic/sports medicine.
