The National Security Division (NSD) of the Department of Justice (DOJ) is seeking an Attorney Advisor to support its Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Unit. This position involves providing legal counsel on matters that balance public access to information with the imperative of protecting national security and effective law enforcement. The attorney will engage in complex legal issues that require coordination across various federal agencies, particularly those within the Intelligence Community (IC), and will work closely with DOJ civil litigators from the Civil Division's Federal Programs branch and U.S. Attorneys' offices nationwide. The role is critical in ensuring that NSD equities are safeguarded in high-profile litigation and other complex matters. In this capacity, the attorney will draft, edit, and review legal documents, including briefs and declarations related to FOIA and Privacy Act (PA) cases. They will also provide legal advice and guidance on the development of FOIA/PA policies and procedures, ensuring that significant issues are identified and addressed effectively. The attorney will support the NSD Records Unit by advising on pre-publication reviews and classification reviews that may affect the release of information under FOIA requests. Additionally, the attorney will assist with general records retention issues and provide support to the NSD FOIA Unit and General Counsel as needed. This position requires a commitment to the NSD mission and the ability to navigate the complexities of national security law while ensuring compliance with legal standards and policies.
