About the position

Hiscock Legal Aid (HLA) is seeking an attorney for its Appeals Program, dedicated to providing legal representation for low-income individuals in Central New York. The role involves working collaboratively within a supportive team to advocate for clients in criminal and family court appeals. The attorney will be part of a mission-driven organization focused on ensuring fair and effective advocacy, rectifying trial errors, and promoting systemic justice.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal representation in criminal and family court appeals before the Fourth Department and Court of Appeals.
  • Collaborate with Law Assistants and other team members to ensure effective advocacy.
  • Engage in legal research and writing to support appeals.
  • Participate in case strategy discussions and client advocacy efforts.
  • Promote justice and systemic change through legal representation.

Requirements

  • Admission or pending admission to the New York Bar, or ability to obtain admission within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills.
  • Commitment to helping people in need.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
