About the position

The Attorney Editor position at The Florida Bar involves editing and collaborating with the Managing Attorney Editor to develop, organize, and market legal publications. The role requires a Juris Doctorate and Florida Bar membership, along with a minimum of one year of legal experience and two years in writing or editing. The position is integral to ensuring the accuracy and quality of legal publications, requiring strong legal research and editing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Review chapters submitted by authors for legal and substantive accuracy.
  • Research to ensure accuracy and edit for grammar and style.
  • Write original material in cooperation with authors and the Managing Attorney Editor.
  • Review final proofs of books for publication.
  • Work with non-attorney associate editors to ensure legal accuracy and quality.
  • Develop and organize new editions and supplements of publications.
  • Recruit and coordinate activities of authors and steering committee members.
  • Assist Managing Attorney Editor in new product development and market evaluation.
  • Prepare and maintain lists of complimentary copies for authors and committee members.
  • Review case law, legislative material, and rules to stay current on subjects covered in manuals.
  • Communicate marketing points to the Lexis Nexis marketing team.
  • Assist in preparing promotional material and participate in marketing events.
  • Assist Florida Bar members with publication-related questions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate and Florida Bar membership required.
  • Minimum of one year of legal experience as an attorney.
  • Two years of experience in writing, editing, legal research, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong writing skills in English.
  • Experience with Lexis-Nexis and legal research.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of legal research techniques.
  • Familiarity with databases such as Lotus Notes and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience with The Rules Regulating The Florida Bar and Florida Rules of Court Procedure.
