About the position

The Attorney position at the Maine Bureau of Financial Institutions involves providing professional legal services to the Bureau, which regulates state-chartered financial institutions. Responsibilities

  • Counsels and advises the Superintendent and professional staff on legal matters pertaining to their administrative responsibilities.
  • Responds to legal inquiries regarding the Maine Banking Code, Maine Consumer Credit Code, Fair Debt Collection Act, and Fair Credit Reporting Act.
  • Supports the Bureau's Consumer Outreach staff by providing legal interpretations and reviews regarding consumer complaints.
  • Monitors and tracks developments in federal banking and credit union law and advises senior agency staff on their impact.
  • Drafts legislation, rules, and interpretive Bulletins.
  • Assists the Deputy Superintendent in monitoring legislation and preparing legislative testimony.
  • Monitors the Bureau's rule-making procedures to ensure compliance with the Administrative Procedures Act.
  • Interacts with legal staff of federal banking agencies to coordinate actions and seek advice.
  • Reviews and interprets agreements and other legal documents utilized by the Bureau.
  • Assists in the development of the Bureau's Annual Report to the Legislature.

Requirements

  • A Law degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice law in Maine and currently registered with the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar.
