About the position

The Advanced Unlicensed Assistant (AUA) in the Adult Emergency Department at OU Health is responsible for providing patient care under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN). This role involves monitoring patients' health status, implementing care plans, and assisting with various medical procedures in a fast-paced emergency environment.

Responsibilities

  • Systematically and continually monitor the patient's health status and implement the plan of care under the supervision of the RN.
  • Carry out physician and nursing orders as directed by the RN.
  • Take and record blood pressures, temperatures, pulse, and weight of patients.
  • Perform blood glucose monitoring.
  • Assist the nurse with obtaining and setting up supplies for procedures.
  • Participate in quality checks to decrease Hospital Acquired Conditions.
  • Monitor intravenous infusions and transfusions as directed by the RN.
  • Set up and discontinue telemetry monitors.
  • Collect specimens for analysis and transport, including blood specimens via venipuncture, sputum samples, urine, and wound cultures.
  • Apply sterile dressings and remove sutures, staples, and/or drains.
  • Perform stomal irrigation and apply colostomy pouches.
  • Perform oral and tracheostomy suctioning.
  • Administer tube feedings to patients.
  • Take emergency actions as required.
  • Perform all treatments and procedures as defined on the initial skills checklist.
  • Report symptoms and significant changes in the patient's condition or behavior to the RN.
  • Assist with the admission, discharge, and transfer process.

Requirements

  • Current AUA License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
  • Knowledge of medical practices, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems and good interpersonal skills.
