About the position

The Advanced Unlicensed Assistant (AUA) in the Adult Emergency Department at OU Health is responsible for providing patient care under the direct supervision of registered nurses (RNs). This role involves monitoring patients' health status, assisting with medical procedures, and ensuring quality care in a fast-paced emergency environment. The AUA will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to support patients and their families during critical situations.

Responsibilities

  • Systematically and continually monitor the patient's health status and implement the plan of care under the supervision of the RN.
  • Carry out physician and nursing orders as directed by the RN.
  • Take and record vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and weight.
  • Perform blood glucose monitoring and assist with obtaining and setting up supplies for procedures.
  • Participate in quality checks to decrease Hospital Acquired Conditions.
  • Monitor intravenous infusions and transfusions as directed by the RN.
  • Set up and discontinue telemetry monitoring as required.
  • Collect specimens for analysis and transport, including blood, sputum, urine, and wound cultures.
  • Apply sterile dressings and remove sutures, staples, and drains as assigned.
  • Perform stomal irrigation and apply colostomy pouches.
  • Administer tube feedings to patients and take emergency actions as required.
  • Report symptoms and significant changes in the patient's condition to the RN.
  • Assist with the admission, discharge, and transfer process.

Requirements

  • Current AUA License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
  • Knowledge of medical practices, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team to ensure quality patient care.
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems and good interpersonal skills.
