About the position

The Audio Engineer at the University of Pennsylvania is a vital role within the Penn Live Arts team, reporting directly to the Audio Supervisor. This position is responsible for the implementation and coordination of all audio activities, systems, equipment, and infrastructure across all Penn Live Arts venues, as well as for event audio at off-site functions supported by Penn Live Arts. The Audio Engineer will engage in a variety of tasks that ensure the smooth operation of audio systems during performances and events, contributing to the overall success of the Penn Live Arts mission. Key responsibilities include participating in the operation, maintenance, and inventory management of all audio infrastructure owned by Penn Live Arts. This involves keeping detailed documentation and console files for patching, routing, RF configuration, and playback. The Audio Engineer will also assist in advancing performance-specific audio needs by coordinating with touring companies and clients, which includes securing backline or other audio rentals, generating stage plots, and negotiating equipment substitutions as necessary. Additionally, the role requires participation in RF coordination between multiple venues, utilizing both stock and rental equipment. The Audio Engineer will serve as the engineer for various performances and events, taking on roles such as A1, front of house, monitors, and deck/A2. Operating a range of digital and analog mixing consoles during events is a critical aspect of this position, as is the seamless integration of client, artist, or rental AV equipment with house audio systems. The role also involves managing audio inventory within an asset management system, tracking preventive maintenance, services, and warranties, and assisting with the upkeep of equipment in the Donnay Recording Studio.

Responsibilities

  • Install, operate, and dismantle audio equipment for performances & events as directed by the Audio Supervisor or event Production Manager.
  • Assist in coordinating audio needs for performances and events for visiting artists, clients, and internal facility users as directed by the Audio Supervisor.
  • Actively participate in the maintenance and repair of Penn Live Arts audio equipment.
  • In coordination with the Audio Supervisor and Production Management, assist in keeping up to date documentation of house audio systems, RF coordination, and console files.
  • Generate patch & input lists and stage plots as needed for visiting artists, clients, and internal facility users as directed by the Audio Supervisor.
  • Assist in the administration of event information and staffing via PLA's administrative channels including Artifax, SharePoint, Smartsheet, Asset Tiger, When To Work, and others as needed.
  • As needed, supervise the work of other audio technicians, work study students, interns, or student groups using PLA venues and/or equipment.
  • As needed, train staff & students on operating audio equipment.
  • As needed, function as a venue supervisor or technician in another department for performances, rehearsals and events.

Requirements

  • Associates of Arts degree and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Preferred bachelor's degree in Technical Theater or technical certification in Audio Production or equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience working in a technical theatre capacity is required.
  • Good working knowledge of sound engineering, audio systems, and industry standard sound paperwork and stage plots is necessary.
  • Knowledge of or aptitude to learn Qlab programming, Dante Networking, and other audio network protocols (MADI, AES50).
  • Strong work ethic and superior communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and possess strong customer service skills.
  • Computer skills are necessary.
  • Supervisory experience is required.
  • Flexible work schedule which includes nights and weekends is necessary.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and use a variety of tools.
