About the position

The Audio & Moving Image Digitization Librarian is a full-time position responsible for expanding the audio and moving image preservation program at the University of Michigan Library. This role involves providing technical expertise in digitization and metadata standards, managing day-to-day operations, overseeing workflows, and collaborating with various stakeholders to support preservation and access needs. The librarian will also guide the work of technicians and interns, ensuring effective project management and training.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the audio/moving image digitization for preservation program.
  • Organize inventories of audio/moving image materials and assess their condition for prioritization in digitization.
  • Prepare estimates, track production, and manage expenditure of funds for digitization projects.
  • Provide training and project management for library staff, hourly assistants, or student interns.
  • Oversee the library's approach to audio/moving image digitization, including writing and evaluating technical specifications.
  • Research and maintain best practices for reformatting audio/moving image recordings and oversee vendor compliance.
  • Work with unit head to write RFPs, identify vendors, and establish contracts for digitization services.
  • Evaluate and update workflows for digitization, including preparation, shipping, tracking, and quality control.
  • Investigate community practices and current research in audio/moving image preservation and incorporate findings into library practices.
  • Contribute to library management and objectives as a member of committees or task forces.
  • Design and present workshops and training seminars for staff and the public regarding preservation of audio/moving image materials.

Requirements

  • ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information studies or equivalent advanced degree and experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in the management, digitization, and preservation of analog and digital audio/moving image recordings.
  • Demonstrated understanding of current and obsolete audio/moving image recording technology and formats.
  • Excellent organizational, project management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in preserving and digitizing moving image collections, particularly film.
  • Experience with metadata formats associated with audio & moving image digitization.
