About the position

The Audio-Visual Engineer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is responsible for designing, provisioning, and commissioning complex audio-visual systems for classrooms and conference rooms. This role involves independent decision-making regarding the deployment and maintenance of AV systems, serving as a technical resource for colleagues, and advising management on planning. The position emphasizes a customer-centric approach, supporting over 1,100 faculty and staff and 10,000 students in a collaborative and respectful work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze functional and performance issues associated with A/V technology and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage deployment of classroom and conference room technologies, including projectors and video conferencing equipment.
  • Perform design reviews and design audiovisual systems for classroom implementation.
  • Research trends in A/V technology and integrate them to enhance instructional and collaboration spaces.
  • Coordinate documentation and training for users and IT staff on A/V technology usage.
  • Supervise student/hourly employees and mentor junior staff as needed.
  • Partner with third-party vendors for troubleshooting AV hardware and software issues.
  • Manage multiple A/V projects and ensure timely delivery of end products.
  • Promote excellent customer service by responding to requests in a professional manner.
  • Consult with units on the design, purchase, and installation of A/V technology.

Requirements

  • High School Graduation or equivalent.
  • Six years of work experience in IT-related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, or network design.
  • Experience in a customer service environment.
  • Experience troubleshooting desktop and mobile computing applications and hardware.
  • Experience with enterprise IT tools such as endpoint management and system imaging.
  • Experience with instructional or collaborative space design.
  • Knowledge of protocols like HDMI, DVI, SDI, and industry standards like HDR, HDCP.
  • Experience with AV equipment theory and setup.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in technology at an institution of higher education.
  • Experience supporting video conferencing or lecture capture systems.
  • Experience scripting or programming in formats like Extron, AMX, or Crestron.
  • Industry recognized certification in audio-visual systems or project management.
