About the position

As an Automation and Controls Engineer at SpaceX, you will play a crucial role in the design and integration of automated systems that enhance the production and reliability of the Starship rocket. This position involves working on safety logic systems and motion-controlled systems to support the manufacturing processes necessary for space exploration.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and manage automation projects including initial factory ideation, machine commissioning, proof of rate capability, and eventual hand-off to operational teams
  • Architect, write, and debug PLC code with an emphasis on generating organized, structured, documented, maintainable, and reusable code for high-volume manufacturing applications
  • Implement ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant systems for robots, gantries, conveyors, and other manufacturing equipment to ensure factory safety and reliability
  • Generate aesthetically simple HMI screens to facilitate the operation and troubleshooting of complex machines
  • Design electrical systems compliant with NEC, NFPA, and UL508A regulations
  • Create schedules and budgets, motivating the team to achieve them

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, computer science, or other engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of experience in industrial or factory automation design and implementation, or involvement in designing and building automated systems

  • Experience in a quick and iterative design and manufacturing role
  • Ability to solve complex problems with simple solutions
  • Experience in cross-functional communication and planning
  • Ability to engineer creative approaches while adhering to safety requirements
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electrical design principles and practices
