About the position

CDM Smith is seeking an Automation and Controls Engineer to join a dynamic team of over 20 engineers in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. This role focuses on delivering high-quality technical work products while providing excellent client service. The successful candidate will be involved in designing instrumentation and control systems, leading testing and startup teams, and mentoring junior staff, all while contributing to the company's mission of delivering innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Create basic to highly complex instrumentation, controls, and related systems designs using 3D and 4D drafting programs.
  • Develop technical memoranda related to design issues for clients and prepare preliminary design reports (PDRs).
  • Review component level shop drawings and respond to requests for information (RFIs).
  • Perform field acceptance testing (FATs) and field inspections.
  • Create human-machine interface (HMI) designs and programmable logic controllers (PLC) reports.
  • Lead testing and startup teams for instrumentation and controls systems with minimal supervision.
  • Assist in developing operations & maintenance manuals for designed systems.
  • Develop systems training for end users under minimal supervision.
  • Lead teams and provide direction and mentoring for junior staff.
  • Assist with proposal development and presentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within 18 months of hire or promotion.
  • 5 years of related experience, with equivalent additional experience considered in lieu of a degree.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Water/Wastewater systems.
  • Experience within an Engineering and/or construction firm.
