About the position

Perrigo Nutritionals, located in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, is seeking an Automation and Controls Engineer to support all aspects of its automation and control systems. This role is critical in ensuring that all work conducted meets FDA and GMP requirements. The Automation and Controls Engineer will be responsible for the complete execution of projects, which includes control system design and programming, documentation management, vendor and contractor management, equipment procurement, and adherence to project schedules and budgets. Additionally, the engineer will provide installation, validation, and start-up support for new systems. The position requires a continuous improvement mindset, where the engineer will engage in root cause analysis to identify opportunities for enhancing automated control systems. This includes executing projects through the management of change (MOC) process. The engineer will also support operations by assisting maintenance, calibration, and automation technicians in advanced troubleshooting, and will be expected to provide limited after-hours support for urgent issues that may arise. Maintaining control systems is a key responsibility, which involves identifying hardware, software, and firmware obsolescence, proposing upgrades, and generating new documentation as needed. Knowledge transfer to operators, mechanics, and technicians is also a vital part of the role, ensuring that all team members are equipped with the necessary automation and control system knowledge. The engineer will work in a dynamic environment that requires teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication skills, while also being able to work independently, multitask, and prioritize under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Complete project execution consisting of control system design and programming, documentation management, vendor/contractor management, equipment procurement, project schedule and budget adherence, as well as installation, validation, and start-up support.
  • Continuously improve the automated control systems through root cause analysis, identification of opportunities for improvement, and execution of projects using the management of change (MOC) process.
  • Support operations by assisting maintenance, calibration, and automation technicians in advanced troubleshooting.
  • Provide limited after hours (night and weekend) support for urgent issues.
  • Maintain control systems by identifying hardware/software/firmware obsolescence and proposing and executing upgrades.
  • Maintain control system documentation and generate new documentation as needed.
  • Provide automation and control system knowledge transfer to operators, mechanics, technicians, etc.
  • Work in a changing environment where teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication skills are required.
  • Work with minimal supervision, multi-tasking and prioritizing under pressure.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of automation and controls engineering or related experience
  • Extensive knowledge of Allen Bradley PLCs and Rockwell Logix software
  • Industrial HMI and/or SCADA development
  • Extensive experience designing, implementing, and/or supporting industrial control systems

  • B.S. degree in engineering

  • Aveva System Platform (Wonderware/InTouch HMI, IDE, Historian, OI)
  • Allen Bradley Panelview HMIs

  • Highly proficient with automation networks including Ethernet, DeviceNet, and ControlNet
  • Configuration of Rockwell and/or Siemens VFDs

  • Thin clients; ThinManager software
  • Microsoft SQL server
  • OT Administration (Active Directory, VMWare, network switch configuration - Cisco/Stratix/Siemens, firewall configuration, software installation and patching)

  • Ability to use and interpret analytical techniques to verify or select alternate design approaches
  • Highly proficient with electrical codes and standards
