About the position

The Raytheon Advanced Manufacturing, Modernization, and Technology (AMMT) team is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated team member to take on the role of Principal Automation Systems Engineer in support of Raytheon Forest, AL, Consolidated Manufacturing Centers. This position will be responsible for executing automation projects within the Forest, AL, factory. The Automation Systems Engineer will work for the Forest, AL, Automation Systems Engineering Manager, and will collaborate with local factory leadership, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, operations, supply chain, and front end of the business Automation Lead to execute automation development and deployment and incorporate advanced Smart Factory/Industry 4.0 technologies as well as identify opportunities for process improvements via lean techniques. The successful candidate will have a strong background in automation systems design, development, deployment, validation, and sustainment in a factory setting, with a particular emphasis on electrical controls. This includes experience with automation systems such as torque controllers, robots, vision systems, and PLCs. The role also requires knowledge of process integration and electromechanical/mechatronic systems, as well as mechanical and/or electrical design, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. The candidate will be expected to demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and to work effectively in Agile teams while utilizing SAP Manufacturing Execution Systems. In addition to technical skills, the position requires strong leadership abilities, particularly in managing relationships across multiple disciplines. The candidate should be familiar with Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory concepts, and have a solid understanding of safety standards and electrical codes. This role is crucial for driving innovation and efficiency in the manufacturing processes at Raytheon, contributing to the overall success of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Execute automation projects within the Forest, AL, factory.
  • Collaborate with local factory leadership, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, operations, and supply chain.
  • Work with the Automation Lead to execute automation development and deployment.
  • Incorporate advanced Smart Factory/Industry 4.0 technologies into projects.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements using lean techniques.
  • Design, develop, deploy, validate, and sustain automation systems in a factory setting.
  • Integrate processes and work with electromechanical/mechatronic systems.

Requirements

  • 2 years professional experience in engineering, manufacturing, operations, and/or automation.
  • University Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) or an Advanced Degree in a related field.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued Secret security clearance.
  • Experience in automation systems design, development, deployment, validation, and/or sustainment in a factory setting.
  • Experience with electrical controls including automation systems (torque controllers, robots, vision systems, PLCs, etc.).
  • Experience with process integration and electromechanical/mechatronic systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, controls, and software engineering terms and principles.
  • Knowledge of Electrical Standards (NFPA79, National Electric Code, UL508A).
  • Understanding of automation programming environments including ladder logic, function block, and Python.
  • Knowledge of Safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA).
  • Leadership skills in managing dotted line relationships across multiple disciplines.
  • Technical background with experience in software, firmware, and electronics development.
  • Proven analytical and organizational skills.
  • Experience working in Agile teams.
  • Familiarity with Industry 4.0 / Smart Factory concepts and Digital Manufacturing Simulation.
