About the position

The Automation Design Engineer will play a crucial role in enhancing the manufacturing processes at Flambeau through various automation initiatives. This position involves designing, developing, and implementing automation solutions across the corporation to drive improvements in safety, efficiency, and cost savings. The engineer will be responsible for developing and justifying automation projects that align with the operational goals of Flambeau, ensuring that all automation efforts contribute positively to the overall manufacturing process. In this role, the engineer will create detailed layouts, fixtures, and end-of-arm tooling design models using CAD software. This includes generating bills of materials, dimensional part drawings, and estimates as necessary. The Automation Design Engineer will also coordinate with Project Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, and Outsourcing teams to develop comprehensive technical specifications for automation projects. Project management skills are essential, as the engineer will be tasked with creating timelines, flow charts, and coordinating meetings to facilitate effective communication among team members. Additionally, the engineer will be expected to research and develop new technologies that can enhance production capabilities. Prototyping will also be a key responsibility, as the engineer will create and generate prototypes for feasibility studies. Continuous learning is vital in this position, as the engineer must strive to maintain a high level of knowledge regarding current and emerging automation technologies, tooling, machinery, materials, and processes. The role may require travel to other Flambeau facilities, vendors, or customers as needed, and the engineer will perform other duties as assigned by the manager.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and justify automation projects driving safety, efficiencies, and cost savings improvements in all Flambeau operations.
  • Create CAD generated detailed layouts, fixtures, and end of arm tooling design models as required.
  • Create bills of materials, dimensional part drawings, and estimates as needed.
  • Coordinate and support Project Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, and Outsourcing as required to develop complete technical specifications.
  • Project management - create timelines and flow charts, and coordinate meetings for effective communication throughout the team.
  • Research and develop new technology to help improve production.
  • Create and generate prototypes as required for feasibility studies.
  • Strive to maintain high levels of knowledge related to current and new automation, tooling, machinery, materials, and processes.
  • Travel to other Flambeau facilities, vendors, or customers as required.
  • Perform all other duties assigned by Manager.

Requirements

  • 4 year degree in related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Understanding of automation design, fixture design, build, and construction.
  • Knowledge in the field of robotics and programming.
  • 2-4 years of experience in plastics processing and manufacturing strongly preferred.
  • Willingness to acquire further knowledge and experience through training opportunities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong 3-D CAD/CAM (SDRC) skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, Solidworks, and Ladder Logic Programming.
