About the position

As a leader in technology and innovation, Southwire Company, LLC is one of North America's largest wire and cable producers. The Automation Engineer II will play a crucial role in designing, budgeting, and managing installations of engineered control systems for both capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives associated with the modernization of plant operations. This position requires a proactive approach to providing technical assistance to plant electronic technicians, engineers, and modernization teams in diagnosing electrical malfunctions, determining necessary repairs, and engineering solutions to eliminate the causes of malfunctions impacting Connected Enterprise platforms. The Automation Engineer will be responsible for promoting safety in the workplace and on all project job sites. The role demands versatility in ladder logic and various PLC programming languages, along with a working knowledge of field control devices such as motors, relays, switches, and photoeyes. Project management responsibilities may include budgeting, design, installation management, and spare parts procurement. The engineer will develop new and modify existing PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications to enhance manufacturing processes and support site OEE objectives. Additionally, the engineer will review the Connected Enterprise platform to identify potential system performance issues, research and implement new manufacturing methods and equipment, and design, develop, maintain, and modify instrumentation and control systems. The role also involves participating in the setup and commissioning of control systems and training affected team members, ensuring a smooth transition and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Promote safety in the workplace and on all project job sites.
  • Design, budget, and manage installations of engineered control systems for capital and continuous improvement projects.
  • Provide technical assistance to plant electronic technicians, engineers, and modernization engineers in diagnosing electrical malfunctions.
  • Determine necessary repairs and engineer solutions to eliminate causes of malfunctions impacting Connected Enterprise platforms.
  • Develop and modify PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications to improve manufacturing processes.
  • Manage project aspects including budgeting, design, installation management, and spare parts procurement.
  • Review Connected Enterprise platform to identify potential system performance issues.
  • Research, evaluate, develop, and implement new manufacturing methods and equipment.
  • Design, develop, maintain, and modify instrumentation and control systems.
  • Participate in the setup and commissioning of control systems and train affected team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • 5+ years of experience in the field of expertise, specifically with Siemens TIA Portal and Rockwell PLC programming.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with various PLC programming languages.
