About the position

The Automation Engineer III position at Novo Nordisk is a critical role within the Automation team, primarily focused on addressing technical, quality, and project-related issues. This position requires a strong foundation in PLC coding and programming, specifically utilizing Ladder Logic at Level 0 - Level 2 ISA-95 standards. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing PLC coding and programming from scratch, as well as troubleshooting and editing existing code. This role is designed for individuals who can work independently while also being able to follow the guidance of a more senior Automation Engineer. The Automation Engineer III will assist in the design, implementation, start-up, and troubleshooting of automation and plant floor control systems. Under direct supervision, the engineer will be responsible for selecting and designing instrumentation, control devices, control panels, and electrical power systems throughout the facility. The role also involves providing support to manufacturing and facilities areas, including resolving deviations, conducting investigations, and addressing quality issues. In addition to technical responsibilities, the engineer will participate in project management activities, which include tracking budgets, creating scopes of work, developing risk assessments, and managing contracts. The position is onsite, and relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates. The work environment is dynamic, requiring the ability to adapt to various physical conditions and collaborate effectively with team members.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the design, implementation, start-up, and troubleshooting of automation and plant floor control systems.
  • Perform PLC coding and programming, ideally from scratch.
  • Troubleshoot, test, validate, deploy, and maintain Automation Systems.
  • Support manufacturing and facilities areas in resolving deviations and quality issues.
  • Assist with the design, procurement, construction, installation, and validation of new and modified control systems.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of procedural or automation improvements to support Plant Objectives.
  • Track spending and budgets for projects, create scope of work, and develop risk assessments.
  • Manage contracts and implement purchase requisitions and funding requests.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in engineering or related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum of seven years related experience with a high school diploma; five years with an Associate's Degree; two years with a Bachelor's Degree; one year with a Master's Degree.
  • Knowledge and experience with instrumentation and control device operation and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA).
  • Familiarity with electrical systems such as 120 VAC, 24 VDC, and 480 VAC.
  • Some knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Windows Operating Systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Control System Technician from the International Society for Automation (ISA) preferred.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD for minor changes and viewing.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team-oriented environment.
