About the position

DeBra-Kuempel Inc. is seeking an Automation Engineer to join our team in Indianapolis, IN. As a wholly owned subsidiary of EMCOR Group, Inc., we pride ourselves on being a leading provider of mechanical and electrical construction and facilities services. The Automation Engineer will play a crucial role in designing and implementing building automation systems, ensuring that our projects meet the highest standards of quality and efficiency. This position requires a strong understanding of HVAC systems, low voltage electrical wiring, and control theory, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with project teams and clients. In this role, you will attend project turnover meetings with the sales and project team to ensure a smooth transition from sales to execution. You will be responsible for designing building automation systems, creating project submittals, and identifying any gaps or ambiguities in project specifications. Your technical expertise will be essential in selecting and ordering controllers and devices, developing written sequences of operations, and programming logic blocks for DDC equipment. You will also be tasked with downloading controllers, testing inputs and outputs, and verifying program operations to ensure everything functions as intended. Additionally, you will build graphical user interfaces with the assistance of our graphics department and coordinate commissioning and testing procedures. Training facility owners and operators on the systems you implement will be a key part of your responsibilities, as will maintaining backups of DDC systems and project documentation. Building strong relationships with both new and existing customers is vital, and you will need to escalate any critical or sensitive issues to the Engineering Manager or Project Manager with recommendations for resolution. Compliance with all company operating policies, procedures, and safety programs is expected, along with the ability to perform additional assignments as required by the needs of the company.

Responsibilities

  • Attend project turnover meetings with the sales and project team.
  • Design building automation systems and create project submittals using project plans and specifications.
  • Identify any gaps or ambiguity in the project and submit RFIs as required.
  • Select and order controllers and devices for projects.
  • Develop written sequence of operations and write logic block programming to run DDC equipment.
  • Download controllers, test inputs/outputs, and verify program operation.
  • Build graphical user interfaces with assistance from graphics department.
  • Obtain field markups and revise the submittals with any changes for owner records.
  • Coordinate commissioning and testing procedures.
  • Train facility owners/operators.
  • Maintain backups of DDC systems and project documentation.
  • Develop strong relationships with new and existing customers.
  • Escalate critical and/or sensitive issues to the Engineering Manager / Project Manager with recommendation for resolution.
  • Comply with all Company operating policies, procedures, and safety programs.
  • Perform additional assignments as required by the needs of the company or as directed.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in related engineering/technology field required, bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering preferred.
  • In lieu of bachelor's degree, a combination of verifiable DDC specific training and five or more years of experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge of the construction industry and contract documentation.
  • Strong understanding of low voltage electrical wiring.
  • Experience in engineering, design, or maintenance of HVAC systems.
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of commercial electrical, HVAC, and control theory.
  • DDC or PLC design experience preferred.
  • DDC or PLC programming experience preferred.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, (i.e. Outlook, Word and Excel).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Visio and other electrical, technical, or construction programs.
  • Familiarity with computer and building architecture networks.
  • Familiarity with third party equipment integration over protocols such as BACnet/Modbus.
  • Programming experience is required, graphical block programming experience is a plus.
