About the position

The Automation Engineer will support the manufacturing department by implementing automation solutions and processes to automate manual tasks within the Marinette, WI facility. This role involves working with PLC programming and Fanuc robots, and it has a high degree of visibility and opportunity within Johnson Controls International (JCI). The engineer will leverage their technical knowledge and expertise to assist in the development of new manufacturing processes and standards, utilizing various automation and mechanical engineering concepts. Responsibilities will encompass the entire project lifecycle, from concept to production, including project management, voice of the customer (VOC) engagement, capital justification, wiring sketches, exploded view assembly procedures, test fixture creation, automated assembly, and documentation support. In this role, the Automation Engineer will collaborate with manufacturing and engineering teams to determine machine requirements and develop specifications for machine functions, user interfaces, and quality control to ensure high reliability. The engineer will design automated assembly line equipment and programming, as well as automated test fixtures and maintenance protocols. They will also be responsible for creating and maintaining bills of materials and test procedures, while closely monitoring and improving manufacturing efficiency and output. The position requires a creative problem solver who understands Design for Manufacturing, automation, product/process flow, and lean manufacturing technology. The engineer will research components and technology from suppliers to enhance control reliability and reduce costs. They will also train and mentor peers on automation concepts and skills, troubleshoot existing automation systems to improve reliability, and ensure compliance with customer standards for dedicated equipment. The role includes guiding the startup of machines, performing troubleshooting with mechanical and electrical technicians, configuring drives and network communications, calibrating machines for accuracy, and assisting with remote customer support and troubleshooting. Documentation updates and preparation of machine operation and service manuals will also be part of the responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • University degree in Engineering (Electrical or Automation preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in an automation and/or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of product/process flow and Design for high volume manufacture including robotic automation.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor/AutoCAD, RSLogix 5000 PLC programming, and Fanuc robotics.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and engineering curiosity.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft-based communications, including Microsoft Project.
