About the position

The Automation Engineer plays a crucial leadership role in the Roofing Division, focusing on the development and execution of Controls & Automation workstreams for capital projects. This position aims to enhance operational efficiency by reengineering job duties, driving future work initiatives, and establishing consistent processes that minimize human interaction. The role encompasses leading application requirements, conducting cost/benefit analyses, prototyping and testing automation systems, and ensuring effective training for operations and maintenance. The Automation Engineer is accountable for the overall success of capital projects, ensuring that business outcomes are achieved and sustained through effective resource management and communication.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the definition of new application requirements and update existing applications based on functional requirements.
  • Provide cost/benefit tradeoff analysis to management.
  • Prototype, design, integrate, and test robotic and automation systems.
  • Deploy automation systems to the manufacturing floor and ensure effective training for operations and maintenance.
  • Lead Advanced Manufacturing initiatives, ensuring successful project delivery.
  • Accountable for project scope, budget, resources, communication, change management, training, testing, deployment, controls, and user acceptance.
  • Facilitate Design Safety Reviews (DSR).
  • Adhere to Project Management processes and participate in all reviews and stage gate deliverables.
  • Build and manage solid performing project teams and engage team members according to growth plans.
  • Lead cross-functional project teams accountable for design, development, and implementation of solutions.
  • Articulate roles and responsibilities to team members and ensure they are accomplished throughout the project.
  • Discuss growth and development plans with leaders to support resource growth plans.
  • Recommend and support project-specific mentoring relationships for team members.
  • Build and grow external partners' capacity to achieve business outcomes and provide innovative solutions.
  • Develop upfront communication of corporate vision, objectives, and constraints.
  • Plan and facilitate seamless onboarding for team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; Master's degree preferred.
  • Five to ten years of experience in a manufacturing environment with demonstrated technical and leadership skills.
  • Hands-on experience with PLCs/HMI, drives, robots, motion controls, and associated programming software.
  • Experience with PLC/Safety PLC/Safety Validation Programming/HMI programming/troubleshooting and support, including drives and line drive systems (Rockwell and Siemens).
  • Understanding of the pillars and principles of Total Productive Maintenance.
