About the position

The Automation Engineer at GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, L.P. will play a pivotal role in providing automation support to the Value Stream, ensuring that the site’s automation practices align with global and industry engineering standards. This position involves a comprehensive engagement in the technical aspects of automated systems, low voltage systems, and Distributed/PLC controls. The Automation Engineer will be responsible for coordinating with suppliers, managing design processes, overseeing lifecycle code management for automated systems, and conducting commissioning and IQ/OQ for assigned systems. Given the critical nature of automation in modern facilities and manufacturing compliance, the Automation Engineer will work closely with both local and global teams to ensure seamless operations and adherence to compliance standards. In this role, the Automation Engineer will actively promote the success of the Automation Engineering group through continuous collaboration with team members. They will champion the voice of the customer in decisions that impact Technical Services resource allocation and project prioritization. A key aspect of this position is to ensure compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and Instrument Society of America (ISA) standards for automated systems. The Automation Engineer will also assist in ensuring compliance and readiness for internal and external inspections, providing necessary support to departments undergoing inspections. The responsibilities of the Automation Engineer will include supporting internal, external, and global regulatory agency audits as a subject matter expert, contributing to management of change activities for automation modifications, and generating automation-related deliverables for both small and large projects. The role will also involve active support for production and facilities teams in troubleshooting and investigations, including participation in a rotating on-call support schedule. Additionally, the Automation Engineer will work with external suppliers to generate budgetary quotes for proposed automation systems and upgrades, review plans for system installation and commissioning, and perform triennial Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) reviews as required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in ensuring compliance and readiness for internal and external inspections and provide adequate support to inspected departments.
  • Support internal, external, and global regulatory agency audits as a subject matter expert.
  • Contribute to management of change activities for automation modifications, including management of design document updates, generation of engineering test protocols, and implementation/testing of solutions.
  • Generate automation-related deliverables and support automation work for implementation of configuration for small and large projects.
  • Actively support production and facilities teams in investigations and troubleshooting, including participation in rotating on-call support.
  • Work with external suppliers to generate budgetary quotes for proposed automation systems, upgrades, and project deliverables.
  • Review and contribute to generation of plans for system installation and commissioning.
  • Perform triennial SOP reviews as required.

Requirements

  • Experience in automation engineering or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of automated systems, low voltage systems, and Distributed/PLC controls.
  • Knowledge of cGMP and ISA compliance standards.
  • Ability to coordinate with suppliers and manage design processes.
  • Experience in conducting commissioning and IQ/OQ for automated systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
