About the position

We are currently seeking an outstanding Automation Engineer to join our world-class team at Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. in Florence. As an Automation Engineer, you will play a key role in driving technological innovation and successfully implementing automation solutions. You will provide support for a twenty-four-hour production operation by diagnosing and resolving hardware and software issues to maintain system readiness and function for a wide variety of system platforms including but not limited to; Allen-Bradley (Rockwell), Wonderware, Honeywell, current DCS, and data historians. Your responsibilities will include completing projects and assignments independently and as part of a team on time and within budget. This requires innovation to analyze situations and develop appropriate designs. You will ensure complete and detailed specifications and documentation through creation and/or review. Additionally, you will develop and modify applications as required to meet changing production needs and assure the successful start-up of new operations by ensuring code and configurations meet specifications and all changes meet validation requirements. You will provide project team input on system capabilities and assist teams with system design decisions. Maintaining automation databases and procedures as needed will also be part of your role. It is essential to work in a safe and responsible manner to sustain an injury-free and incident-free workplace while staying in sync with all job-related safety and other training requirements. You will maintain innovative Automation systems, solutions, implementation strategies, and trends, act as a backup for the Automation manager for duties such as audit support and signature authority, and mentor and train team members and peers, providing technical leadership and assistance to personnel at all levels. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related subject area is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of confirmed experience with substantial expertise in a current DCS such as PlantPAx or Delta V is required.
  • Experience in a cGMP environment is preferred.
  • Experience in computer control system start-ups, loop tuning, bug fixes, and control system modification and maintenance is required.
  • Experience developing process or equipment control applications is required.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Self-starter that is independent and reliable.
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must work well with a team.
  • Experience with development of configurable control and supervisory system and historian type program development, configuration and maintenance including the OSI PI, Wonderware, and Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) FT Historian data historians.
  • Experience with at least one historian is required.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) products ranging from independent SLC, Micro-, Compact-, and ControlLogix applications to a full PlantPAx DCS including FTBatch is required.
  • Experience with some of the products is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Wonderware stand-alone and Wonderware System Platform as a supervisory system is helpful.
  • Experience with IT and OT networking including VLAN management and Stratix switch configuration is helpful.
  • Experience with Honeywell controls for BMS and Fire systems is helpful.
  • Experience in biotech or pharmaceutical industries is helpful.
