The Automation Engineer is responsible for the full-scale implementation of automated control systems, which includes process control systems, factory automation, water and wastewater SCADA systems, and other digital control systems. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of engineering principles and the ability to manage complex projects effectively. The Automation Engineer will report directly to the Department Manager and will be involved in various aspects of project execution, ensuring compliance with standards and achieving quality outcomes. In this position, the Automation Engineer will plan, organize, and design the implementation of engineering disciplines that contribute to project execution. This includes identifying critical technical roadblocks and risks, providing the necessary resources to navigate through these challenges, and managing the project engineering process. The engineer will also assist in quantifying resources for specific project engagements and prepare corresponding statements of work as necessary. The role involves designing and implementing cellular and RF communication networks for SCADA systems and RTUs, creating software point/tag databases for automation system projects, and coordinating with the graphics team and customers to produce required graphic screens. Additionally, the Automation Engineer will develop and deploy PLC-based and other digital controller programs for automated control and data collection, as well as develop HMI applications. The engineer will also design control system circuits to perform automatic control sequences and safety functions, specify hardware components, and create and execute Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT). Training and indoctrination of newly hired Automation Engineers and technicians will also be part of the responsibilities, along with ensuring compliance with internal documentation requirements.
