About the position

Precision Castparts Corp. (PCC) is seeking an Automation Engineer to join our team at Carlton Forge Works, a leading forge manufacturer in the industry. This role is pivotal as we embark on automating our production processes to enhance capacity and improve safety across our operations. The Automation Engineer will work closely with the Director of Engineering to manage and execute capital improvement projects aimed at reducing variable costs, minimizing variability in production, and decreasing human error that leads to scrap. The successful candidate will lead the design, quoting, and installation of a new robotic grinding cell specifically for inside diameter grinding of metal aerospace ring forgings. This position requires supervision of the system's operation to ensure that full production capacity is achieved. Additionally, the Automation Engineer will be responsible for project management and design guidance for automation systems, including the integration of DocuWare to replace manual processes with automated solutions, as well as modernization of rotary furnace mechanical controls. The role also involves developing and submitting Engineering Change Authorization Requests (ECAR) for the replacement of rotary furnace control systems, primarily utilizing Rockwell ControlLogix 5000. The engineer will oversee the implementation of these changes, coordinating with vendors to minimize disruptions to production. Another key responsibility includes transitioning manual tool handling and lubrication processes to a robotic-based system, significantly improving safety for our associates. The engineer will conduct internal and external benchmarking with subject matter experts to identify best practices and ensure operational efficiency. This project is expected to attract attention from other PCC sites, providing opportunities for reverse benchmarking and knowledge sharing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, quoting, and installation of a new robotic grinding cell for inside diameter grinding of metal aerospace ring forgings.
  • Supervise the operation of the robotic grinding system to ensure full production is achieved.
  • Manage and provide design guidance for automation systems such as DocuWare to eliminate paper and manual processes, integrating with Oracle MRP.
  • Modernize rotary furnace mechanical controls by developing and submitting ECAR for replacement of five rotary furnace control systems using Rockwell ControlLogix 5000.
  • Supervise and project manage the implementation of the ECAR, coordinating with vendors and minimizing production disruptions.
  • Transition manual tool handling and lubrication processes to a robotic-based system, improving safety for associates.
  • Develop design, obtain quotes, determine project ROI, and submit ECAR for one press cell.
  • Conduct Safety FMEA comparisons for manual labor tasks to be replaced by automation, collaborating with Operations, Safety, and Facilities teams.
  • Benchmark safety best practices and operational efficiencies with subject matter experts.
  • Provide benchmarking opportunities for other PCC sites observing the project.
