About the position

The Automation Engineering Intern position at Novelis in Guthrie, KY offers an opportunity for students to gain hands-on industry experience in automation engineering. The intern will work closely with the local engineering team, contributing to various projects and learning about industrial networking, application development, and manufacturing process automation. This internship is designed for students who are currently enrolled in a four-year university and are looking to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Learn about industrial networking and infrastructure, application development, database management, and communication techniques between systems.
  • Provide support for various Automation Engineering Projects.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of plant MES system and manufacturing process automation systems.
  • Contribute to scripting interfaces and messaging between MES and sub-systems.
  • Contribute to maintenance of an automation cluster and application including server, storage, and virtual environment.
  • Participate in the deployment of O.S. and specific application update on all automation devices.
  • Application of state-of-the-art technology and techniques to resolve complex engineering problems.
  • Perform special study programs involving technical data of a complex nature.
  • Support manufacturing by working closely with the Operations, Engineering and Process Groups.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an accredited 4-year University.
  • Must be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or recent Graduate.
  • Interested in gaining hands-on industry experience prior to graduation.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills which are essential for interacting with all levels of the organization.
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with SQL programming and relational databases (MS SQL Server, T-SQL preferred).
  • Experience with object-oriented programming languages and scripting (C# preferred).
  • Experience with application messaging (MSMQ preferred).
  • Experience with web development (RESTful APIs, Angular, NodeJS preferred).
  • Experience in multi-threaded applications development.
  • Experience with version control (Git preferred) and DevOps (Azure DevOps preferred).
  • Experience in Windows operating system management and configuration, including user management (AD).
  • Experience with network management (Cisco preferred).
  • Experience with virtualization (VMware vSphere preferred).
  • Experience with OPC (Kepware preferred).
  • Experience in building client/server applications HMI/SCADA systems (WinCC preferred).
  • Experience in PLC systems such as Siemens TIA Portal is a plus.
