About the position

The Controller at Hinderer Motor Company is responsible for overseeing the accounting operations of the dealership, ensuring compliance with accounting principles and standards. This role involves producing financial reports, maintaining accurate accounting records, and implementing controls and budgets to maximize profitability. The Controller will report directly to the CFO and play a key role in financial forecasting and analysis, as well as leading the business office team.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare complete financial statements monthly according to dealership guidelines and manufacturer formats.
  • Ensure all manufacturer accounts, including warranty claims and rebates, are current and accurate.
  • Partner with leadership to manage the financial results of the dealership.
  • Interpret financial statements and daily operating controls, informing dealers of developing trends.
  • Participate in the preparation of short- and long-term financial forecasts for the dealership.
  • Provide department managers with detailed financial and management reports.
  • Maintain an effective cash management system and recommend profitable use of excess cash.
  • Direct assessment of depreciation rates for capital assets.
  • Review the general ledger and scheduled accounts, investigating unusual entries.
  • Ensure proper bank reconciliation and compliance with government finance regulations.
  • Manage the dealership computer system and oversee payroll operations.
  • Administer a loss review program and maintain loss reserves for contingent liabilities.
  • Supervise all office personnel and strive to improve data integrity and reporting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in the automotive industry.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate financial information effectively to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with dealership accounting software
  • Proficiency in Excel
  • Knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)
  • Experience in budgeting and financial forecasting.
