About the position

The Automotive Fleet Technician at SoCalGas is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on vehicles and construction equipment to ensure their safe and uninterrupted operation. This role involves working in the field, adhering to safety procedures, and maintaining a diverse fleet of vehicles, including natural gas vehicles. The technician will also engage in training and guiding junior staff while managing inventory and vendor relations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled vehicle maintenance on all Company vehicles and construction equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems in vehicles and equipment.
  • Conduct thorough preventative maintenance services as per the Company's schedule.
  • Analyze user complaints and initiate necessary repairs.
  • Road test vehicles to identify malfunctions and ensure proper operation.
  • Adjust, repair, or replace parts using various diagnostic instruments and tools.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and keep a maintenance history file.
  • Train and guide Auto Service Assistants as needed.
  • Manage automotive parts inventory and liaise with vendors for supplies.
  • Notify drivers of service due dates and arrange loan vehicles if necessary.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or higher required.
  • Valid California Driver's License (Class A may be required for some assignments).
  • Formal Auto Mechanic training and knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Certification from Trade/Vocational school or Community College in Automotive Technology or ASE certifications (A8, L1, A6, or Master Mechanic Certificate).
  • Ability to pass a pre-qualification examination.

Nice-to-haves

  • Smog inspection and repair certification.
  • Experience with alternative fuel vehicles (natural gas, propane, electric).
  • Good communication skills and experience in preparing written reports.
