About the position

The Autonomous Systems Test Engineer at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) plays a crucial role in advancing AI and autonomy for military applications. This position involves collaborating with a diverse team to develop innovative testing and evaluation methods for intelligent autonomous combat systems, ensuring the U.S. maintains its leadership in defense technology.

Responsibilities

• Research and develop novel approaches for test and evaluation of AI and autonomous systems.
• Develop test requirements, safety plans, processes, and execution strategies for intelligent combat systems.
• Support software, hardware, ground, and flight testing of AI and autonomous systems, including testing at remote locations.
• Provide test and evaluation expertise to customers regarding testing approaches, plans, schedules, and capabilities.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• At least five years of relevant experience as a test engineer.
• Experience developing test plans/reports and supporting live test events.
• Experience with developing analysis tools and techniques using Python, MATLAB, or other coding languages.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Ability to travel within CONUS to U.S. Government and defense contractor sites.
• Ability to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

• Master's degree (or higher) in Aerospace, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Experience working with unmanned aircraft test and evaluation.
• Experience with test and evaluation related to autonomy, AI, and/or machine learning.
• Active Top Secret clearance.
