About the position

The Autopsy Technician plays a vital role in supporting forensic pathologists at the State Medical Examiner's office in Anchorage, Alaska. This position involves assisting in determining the cause and manner of death, which is crucial for providing closure to families. The technician will engage in various tasks such as capturing photographs, conducting radiological examinations, and collecting specimens, all while ensuring the sensitivity and respect required in such circumstances.

Responsibilities

  • Assist forensic pathologists in determining the cause and manner of death.
  • Capture photographs of the deceased and the scene.
  • Conduct radiological examinations as needed.
  • Carefully collect specimens and preserve evidence.
  • Identify and document evidence with sensitivity and respect.

Requirements

  • An associate's degree (or equivalent post-secondary education) with at least six semester credits in human anatomy and/or physiology; or two years of technical experience in a morgue, hospital, or similar setting; or a combination of education and experience as specified.
  • Knowledge of proper packaging and storage of evidence and chain of custody procedures.
  • Ability to operate photography and X-ray equipment.
  • Ability to use instruments such as scalpels, needles, and saws.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

  • Experience in a morgue or forensic laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with forensic procedures and protocols.
