About the position

Veolia North America is seeking an Auxiliary Operator (AO) to safely and reliably operate various equipment including wood dryers, fans, pumps, motors, and biomass-fired steam boilers. The AO will perform operations and maintenance (O&M) tasks for the power plant, ensuring safe working conditions and efficient equipment operation. This role requires physical capability to handle demanding tasks and the ability to work rotating shifts as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all O&M activities including monitoring of all equipment and noting operating conditions of auxiliary equipment for the dryer operation and fuel yard operation.
  • Report conditions, trends, and abnormalities to the Shift Supervisor.
  • Perform routine boiler chemistry sampling procedures for all boilers and make adjustments per Control Operator's instructions when assigned to the power plant.
  • Lock out equipment for maintenance and unlock and retest equipment after completion of repair.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as equipment lubrication and minor repairs to operating boiler auxiliaries such as fuel feed systems, pumps, and fans.
  • Maintain safe working conditions by identifying, reporting, and correcting unsafe conditions in the work area.
  • Perform operational rounds and required duties of the Auxiliary Operator position.
  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to identify system components and how those components operate and interact.
  • Receive deliveries as required.
  • Work mandatory overtime as required.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years' experience in central utility power plants including boilers, turbines, dryers, and utility distribution systems.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of combustion, boiler firing practices, steam turbines, and water treatment.
  • Skill in the operation of boilers, burners, valves, pumps, fans, and water treatment systems.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance of equipment and safety-related tasks such as locking, unlocking, and testing for maintenance activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and operate plant auxiliary equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to tolerate temperature extremes and confined spaces.
  • Ability to climb ladders and lift heavy equipment/materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear PPE and accurately read and interpret gauges.
