About the position

The Airport Operations Specialist position at the City of McAllen involves working under general supervision in a highly technical operations center located in a public area of the terminal building. This role serves as the first point of contact for the public, providing continuous services that involve sensitive matters requiring utmost tact and resourcefulness. The specialist is responsible for monitoring various automated systems, including the Building Management System, Fire Suppression and Alarm System, Flight Information Display System, and closed circuit television system. Additionally, the position requires a thorough understanding of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations, as well as local police, fire, and aviation department policies and procedures. The specialist will also monitor weather conditions for potential severe storms that could impact aviation operations. Coordination and dispatch of police, aircraft rescue, fire fighting, and maintenance for both routine and emergency tasks are key responsibilities. The role includes maintaining logs of security identification badges, lock and key control, and other records as assigned. The specialist is expected to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and provide passenger services such as information, traveler's aide, centralized paging, and first aid. The position may also involve assisting with other job-related assignments and projects within the department as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors the automated Building Management System, Fire Suppression and Alarm System, Flight Information Display System, and closed circuit television system.
  • Monitors weather for potential severe storms that impact aviation.
  • Responsible for the coordination and dispatch of all police, aircraft rescue and fire fighting, and maintenance for routine and emergency tasks.
  • Performs duties according to airport policies defined by Federal Aviation and Transportation Security Regulations, airport rules and regulations, and numerous other Federal, State, and local laws.
  • Assists in filing and maintaining a continuous log of security identification badges, lock and key control, parking stickers, and records/reports as assigned.
  • Responsible for making official entries in the Airport's log book of all required events and pertinent information.
  • Collects fingerprints using an automated live scan fingerprint machine.
  • Communicates effectively, courteously and clearly; verbally and in writing.
  • Provides passenger services such as information, traveler's aide, centralized paging, first aid and answers the airport's 24-hour help e-mail system.
  • Assists on other job-related assignments and projects in the department when requested.

Requirements

  • Accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent; six months of post high school education preferred.
  • One year of customer service or operations work experience; equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.
  • Current, valid Texas Class C driver's license.
  • Ability to use general office equipment, such as a computer, copy/fax machine, 2-way radio, and multi-line telephone.
  • Ability to meet the public in a courteous manner using tact and diplomacy.
